WashU’s economic impact totals $8.8 billion

Washington University in St. Louis continues to play a vital role in the local economy, providing jobs, supporting local businesses and drawing millions in research dollars to the region. During fiscal year 2023 which concluded on June 30, the university’s direct and indirect contributions to the St. Louis economy totaled $8.8 billion. WashU also supported a total of 54,380 jobs in the region.

A tradition for more than two decades, the Greater St. Louis Marathon returns April 27 with a new name, a new course, new pre- and post-run events and, for the first time, the National Running Club Championships & Rally. The race also has a new partner: Washington University in St. Louis.

WashU balloon goes over big

For the first time, Washington University in St. Louis sponsored a hot air balloon in the 2023 Great Forest Park Balloon Race, an annual hot air balloon festival held in Forest Park. “Time Traveler,” the WashU balloon, was among the dozens of entrants that delighted the community during the pre-race Balloon Glow, Friday, Sept. 15, and the race itself Saturday, Sept. 16.

Popular local restaurants to open campus locations

As part of Washington University in St. Louis’ broader efforts to partner with St. Louis businesses, University Dining Services has invited four local restaurants that are minority- or woman-owned to open locations at campus eateries in August. Beast Craft BBQ will serve St. Louis-style barbecue in Parkside Cafe. Owned by David and Meggan Sandusky, Beast Craft BBQ operates a restaurant in Belleville, Ill., and a food truck.
